A Fiordland Itinerary from Te Anau

Te Anau is where DOC recommends you plan the Milford trip from, and this itinerary uses it as the base. It fits Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, the lake and a spare day into three or four nights, and says what to cut when you have less. The Fiordland tours from Te Anau are compared on their own page.

How many days do you need?

Three nights is the sweet spot. You get a day for each fiord and a spare day for weather, which DOC advises you plan for: prepare for at least one wet day, it says. Two nights covers one fiord and the lake. Four lets you add a long walk or a second go at a flight.

Day one: what should you do on arrival?

Arrive by early afternoon. Te Anau is 179 km from Queenstown, about 2 hours 20 minutes by DOC's figures, and 150 km from Invercargill, about 2 hours. Regular buses run from both.

Then get on the water close to town. The three-hour cruise on Faith, a 1935 motor yacht, crosses Lake Te Anau with a guided walk of about 40 minutes to the Hidden Lakes. Lake Te Anau holds more fresh water than any other lake in Australasia, DOC says. If you would rather move fast, the jet boat runs down the Waiau River to Lake Manapouri in 75 minutes.

The DOC visitor centre is temporarily at 26 Town Centre, until October 2026. It opens Monday to Saturday, 9 to 12 and 1 to 4. Stop in for the road and track conditions for the next two days.

Day two: how do you spend it on Milford Sound?

Spend it on the road as much as the water. The Milford Road runs 120 km from Te Anau, and DOC says to allow at least two hours, plus 45 minutes to park and walk to the terminal if you drive. Visit Fiordland suggests three hours with the stops.

The walks day with a nature guide does the stops for you. It collects you in town, stops for short walks at Lake Gunn and in the Hollyford Valley, cruises two hours to the Tasman Sea, and packs you a picnic lunch. Driving yourself? Day three: how do you reach Doubtful Sound?

By boat, then coach, then boat. Manapouri is 21 km from Te Anau, about 20 minutes. From Pearl Harbour you cross Lake Manapouri to West Arm, ride over Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove and cruise for three hours.

The Doubtful Sound day from Te Anau includes the coach to Manapouri and takes 8 hours 30 minutes. If you drive to Manapouri yourself, the day from there takes seven. Lake Manapouri can turn rough and choppy quickly, DOC says, particularly in the afternoon. Bring a warm layer for the deck.

Why keep a spare day for weather?

Because Fiordland takes about 7 m of rain a year, over about 200 rain-days. The cruises run in the rain, and the waterfalls are better for it. What rain cancels is flights, long walks and, in winter, sometimes the road.

So keep one day loose. If the weather is fine, use it for Key Summit, 3 to 5 hours from The Divide by Visit Fiordland's reckoning, or the first stretch of the Kepler Track: Brod Bay is 5.6 km from the car park, about 1 hour 30 minutes. If it pours, take the glowworm caves across the lake, which RealNZ says are just 12,000 years old.

What fits into an evening?

The champagne cruise on Faith, 90 minutes on Lake Te Anau with champagne, wine and canapés, and a turn at the helm if you want one. It anchors in a sheltered cove before sailing back. In summer the light lasts late: Visit Fiordland gives daylight from about 5:30 am to 9:30 pm.

In winter the sun sets about 4:30 pm, so plan your evenings indoors. A walk along the lakefront needs no booking at any time of year.

What could a fourth day add?

A long walk, or a second try at a flight. The Kepler Track is a 60 km Great Walk loop that starts 5 km from Te Anau; a boat can take you across to Brod Bay, and a night at Luxmore Hut must be booked ahead with DOC. Key Summit, from The Divide on the Milford Road, takes 3 to 5 hours return by Visit Fiordland's reckoning.

For a shorter stop on the same road, Lake Marian Falls is a 20-minute walk from the Hollyford Road turn-off, over a swing bridge. And if you want a taste of the Milford Track without the four days, the cruise-and-track day from Te Anau adds an 11 km return walk from the Milford end to Giant Gates Falls. You walk that section on your own, after a water taxi from Deepwater Basin.

What should you book ahead?

Book the fiord days first, then fit the lake and river trips around them. Most fares here refund in full up to 24 hours before, so booking early costs you little and keeps your seat on a busy summer day.

Three things need more care. A night at a Great Walk hut books out, and it is paid for separately. The Doubtful Sound overnight refunds only up to 14 days before. The Fiordland Jewel on Milford Sound is non-refundable, so book it only once your dates are fixed.

What if you only have one day?

Pick one fiord and give it the whole day. From Te Anau, that is the walks day to Milford Sound or the Doubtful Sound day. Our guide to choosing between the two lays out which suits you.

What if you are coming from Queenstown?

Break the trip. Drive or bus to Te Anau on day one, which DOC puts at 2 hours 20 minutes, and do the fiords from there. DOC recommends planning the Milford trip from Te Anau rather than Queenstown, and the return road trip from Queenstown is about 600 km.

If you must go back to Queenstown each night, a flight saves the day. The fly-cruise-fly days take four and a half to five hours, and you can book one for your last day in town.

How do you get between the towns?

By road, and mostly on your own wheels or a coach. Te Anau sits on SH94, 179 km from Queenstown and 150 km from Invercargill, with regular buses from both. Manapouri is 21 km, about 20 minutes, further south.

From Te Anau to Milford Sound there is one road, 120 km long, with no fuel and signal in only a few places. If you are not driving, the walks day and the cruise-and-track day both start in town, and the Doubtful Sound day from Te Anau includes the coach to Manapouri.

Where should you stay?

In Te Anau, the park's largest town, on or near the lakefront. Most meeting points are there: the historic wharf behind the visitor centre, the Fiordland Jet office, and the RealNZ centre at 85 Lakefront Drive. Manapouri, 20 minutes on, is quieter and puts you at the Doubtful Sound wharf.

Milford Sound itself has a lodge, cafés and little else. If you want a night on the fiord, the overnight boats are the way to do it.

What does a three-day plan cost?

Add up three fares. The lake cruise with a walk is $94, the jet boat $117. The walks day to Milford Sound is $157 with lunch, and the Doubtful Sound day from town $218. There is no park entry fee. Most international visitors pay New Zealand's NZ$100 visitor levy with their visa or NZeTA, before they arrive.
