Why a small boat changes the cruise
Most people who drive the Milford Road book a cruise at the terminal. This boat is small, and it only fills to half its capacity. That gives you room to move between the cabin and the deck, and a skipper who can take the boat in close. Earney L. found the boat went close enough to the waterfalls for good photographs.
The cabin has comfortable lounge-style seating, so a cold or wet day is fine. Stay inside with a hot drink, then step out for the falls. Alana T. went in rain and snow, and found the waterfalls in full flow more than made up for the cold.
What you see in an hour and three quarters
The cruise runs out along Milford Sound, Piopiotahi in Māori, a fiord 16 km long and 265 m deep. Mitre Peak rises 1,692 m straight from the water on one side. Waterfalls drop down the walls on both, and after rain many more appear.
New Zealand fur seals lie on the rocks, and on some days dolphins or Fiordland crested penguins appear. The skipper names what you are looking at as you go. Checking in at the Milford Sound terminal
The Milford Sound Visitor Terminal is at the end of the road, at the head of the fiord. Inside, Cruise Milford's counter is the second on the left. Children need proof of age at check-in, so bring a passport or an ID card for each child.
The boat sails every day of the year except 25 December. If you have questions about the drive or the cruise, the booking office answers from 8am to 8pm.
Parking and the walk in
The main car park costs NZ$10 an hour, paid at the machines by card only, and it is about 10 minutes' walk to the terminal. A free car park sits on the corner of the Milford Road and Deepwater Basin, about 40 minutes' walk away. Disability parking is right outside the terminal.
The Department of Conservation says to allow at least two hours from Te Anau, plus 45 minutes to park and walk in. Build in time for stops and for the tunnel lights. There is no fuel between Te Anau and the fiord, so fill up first. Every leg of the drive is on getting to Fiordland.
What is on board, and what to bring
Coffee, tea and biscuits are served on every sailing. No food is sold, so bring a packed lunch or snacks on board; you are welcome to eat them. Lea C. drove in with their own group and found parking and check-in easy. Pack a warm layer and a rain jacket, whatever the forecast in Te Anau says.

Finding the counter in the terminal
The meeting point is the Cruise Milford counter, the second on the left inside the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal. The cruise ends back at the terminal.
