You leave Queenstown at 6:30 or 7:00 in the morning in a van of no more than 15 people. The road runs round the lake to Te Anau, then into the national park, with short stops at the valley, the reflecting lakes and the mountains before the tunnel. Queenstown to Milford Sound in one day, 15 seats

Why go with a guide instead of driving yourself

Milford Sound is about 300 km from Queenstown by road, and the Department of Conservation puts the return trip at 600 km and 12 to 14 hours. The last 120 km, from Te Anau, is the Milford Road: an alpine highway with no fuel and no shops, a tunnel with traffic lights, and snow and ice in winter. On this day someone else drives it, and you look out of the window.

That matters most on the way home. After a long day on the water, the drive back is more than four hours, and in winter much of it is in the dark. Your guide knows where the photo stops are, how long each one takes, and when to move on. John F. put it simply: you could hire a car, but without a guide you would not know where to stop.

The stops on the Milford Road

The first leg follows Lake Wakatipu and the high, winding stretch known as the Devil's Staircase, then crosses farmland to Te Anau. Here you stop for about 20 minutes, beside Lake Te Anau, New Zealand's second-largest lake, for a break before the national park.

From Te Anau the stops come quickly. You pull over for about 10 minutes in the Eglinton Valley, then 10 minutes at the Mirror Lakes, where a short boardwalk shows the Earl Mountains upside down in still water. Lake Gunn is often a 5-minute stop. The road then follows the Hollyford River, and in the Darran Mountains you stop again for 10 minutes. This is kea country: enjoy the parrots, and do not feed them.

Then comes the Homer Tunnel, 1.2 km through the mountain, begun in 1935. In the busy months traffic lights hold each direction in turn, with waits of up to 20 minutes. Two hours on Milford Sound

At the terminal your guide hands you over to the crew of Cruise Milford, whose small boutique boats sail with room to move on deck. The stop is two hours, and the cruise takes you under Mitre Peak, 1,692 m straight up from the water, and in towards the waterfalls on the walls of Piopiotahi. On a wet day there are more of them, not fewer.

Pops View, and the road home

On the way back you stop for 10 minutes at Pops View, a lookout over the Divide near the start of the Routeburn Track, and your guide tells the stories of the Māori explorers who crossed these mountains. After that it is the long drive to Queenstown, with breaks on the way. You are dropped back where you were picked up, about 13 hours after you left.

What the fare pays for: lunch, cruise, pickup

For $215 a person, the fare covers the guided day there and back, the cruise, a picnic lunch, snacks and water, and pickup and drop-off at listed hotels. Children aged 7 and under get a booster seat, or you can bring your own. Infants up to 3 do not get a lunch pack, so bring food for them.

The return flight is extra and must be chosen at booking. Flights are on request until the airline confirms, and each traveller's name and weight are needed, with a limit of 130 kg. 6. The tunnel. Through the mountain and down to the fiord.

What the fare covers

Pickup in Queenstown, or The Station

You can choose a pickup from the listed Queenstown hotels when you book. If you do not choose one, you are booked from the default meeting point: The Station, on the corner of Shotover and Camp Streets. Pickups run at 6:30am for the 6:30 departure and 7:00am for the 7:00 departure, and the day ends back where it started.
