Fiordland with Kids: What Works for Families

The short answer. Yes, Fiordland works for families, but the length of the day matters more than anything else. A Milford Sound day from Queenstown takes 13 hours, much of it in a vehicle. Base yourselves in Te Anau and the days shrink, and the town's short jet boat and lake trips suit children well. Most Fiordland guided tours take children, with a few age limits worth knowing.

Is Fiordland worth it with children?

For most families, yes. If your children like boats, waterfalls, seals on the rocks and parrots by the road, they will like Fiordland. What wears them out is the road. The fiords are a long way from anywhere, and the only way to Milford Sound without flying is a 120 km alpine road from Te Anau, about two hours each way.

So plan your trip around the drive, not the cruise. A child can sit happily through a two-hour cruise with a snack and a window. Thirteen hours from Queenstown and back is a harder ask, however good the stops are.

What children love most

The jet boat

The jet boat and nature walk from Te Anau runs for 75 minutes down the Waiau River to Lake Manapouri, with a 15-minute walk in the forest on the way. Spray jackets and life jackets are supplied, and warm gear when it is cold. You can bring children from 4. Donna found it thrilling but always felt safe.

The jet boat and bike ride adds an 11 km ride back to town on the Lake2Lake trail. It is open to children from 2, but the ride suits children who can cycle that far. Most riders take 1.5 to 2 hours, and e-bikes help anyone short on fitness. Deborah found it gentler than the jet boats in Queenstown, with more stories and fewer spins.

The boat on the fiord

On Milford Sound, the boutique cruise is 1 hour 45 minutes long, takes strollers and wheelchairs, and serves coffee, tea and biscuits. Children need proof of age at check-in. Alana T. went on a day of rain and snow and found the waterfalls in full flow worth the cold.

A lake, a yacht and a walk

The 3-hour cruise on Faith, a 1935 motor yacht, crosses Lake Te Anau and stops for a guided walk of about 40 minutes to the Hidden Lakes. Sharon found the walk unhurried, with the plants explained on the way.

What to prepare for

You need to plan for three things: the toilets, the food and the cold. Plan for all three and the day goes smoothly.

  • Toilets: between Te Anau and Milford Sound there are public toilets only at Knobs Flat. The small-group van from Queenstown has none, so use every stop.
  • Food: there are no shops on the road and no food on the small boats. Pack lunch and snacks for all of you.
  • Cold and wet: Fiordland gets up to 7 m of rain a year. Bring your waterproofs and a warm layer for each child, even in summer.
  • Car seats: the small-group day supplies booster seats for children 7 and under, and infant seats are available.
  • Infant meals: children up to 3 do not get a lunch pack on the small-group day.
Important. A 13-hour day is long for young children. If you can, spend a night or two in Te Anau and do Milford Sound from there. The towns and distances are on the Fiordland map.

The best Milford Sound day for a family

From Te Anau, the day with a nature guide and short walks takes no more than 15 people, stops for walks of 5 to 30 minutes, and includes a picnic lunch and a 2-hour cruise. You can bring children from 5. Mary, from Canada, had the only children on board, and the guide kept them and the adults interested all day. Joseph's family had thought about driving themselves and were glad they had not.

If you must do it in one go from Queenstown, the small-group day with lunch is the easiest way. It supplies booster seats and takes strollers. Baohan T.'s family found the guide took photographs of them at every stop. Charlie H. found the thirteen hours went quickly, but that was an adult's view.

Doubtful Sound with children

The quieter fiord is a longer day but an easier one to sit through, because it keeps changing. The Doubtful Sound day from Manapouri is 7 hours: a boat across Lake Manapouri, a coach over the pass with a stop in the rainforest, then three hours on the fiord, and the same in reverse. Your children get three rides instead of one long one. Louise found the boat warm inside, with room to move freely out on deck.

Food and drinks are sold on board by card only, so bring snacks if your children are fussy. The day is not suitable for wheelchairs: the journey has several legs, and the wharves float. The crossing is described on the Doubtful Sound page.

Flying with children

Fly, cruise and fly takes about five hours from Queenstown, with 30 to 40 minutes in the air each way. On the plane and boat day, infants under 11 kg fly free on an adult's lap. If your child weighs more, they need their own seat, charged at a child rate. When the wind rose, Carrina's family had the flight turned into a flyover, with the operator calling ahead to arrange it.

Practical tips for families

  • Book the earliest cruise you can and drive in fresh. DOC says to allow two hours from Te Anau and 45 minutes to park and walk in.
  • Stop at the reflecting lakes. The boardwalk is 400 m and wheelchair-accessible, so a stroller or small legs manage it in 10 minutes.
  • Keep the kea entertained from a distance. They wait at the tunnel, and DOC asks that nobody feeds them.
  • Take the dog elsewhere. Dogs are not allowed in the national park, even in the car.
Useful tip. Te Anau has the short trips. With a toddler, do the jet boat or the lake one day and Milford Sound the next, rather than both in one. The shorter trips are all on Fiordland jet boat tour and Fiordland boat tours.

What to combine it with

Te Anau has the lake front, the Kepler Track to Brod Bay, about 1 hour 30 minutes each way, and the glowworm caves across the lake, 12,000 years old, which you visit by boat.
